Jeffries, formerly a war correspondent in Europe and the Middle East, working for Britain’s largest-selling newspaper, the Daily Mail, was sent to Palestine in 1922 by its owner, Lord Northcliffe, to report on its developing political and economic affairs—just five years on from the Balfour Declaration and its promise of British support for the establishment in Palestine of a Jewish national home.

August 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, when major armed conflict first began in then-Ottoman Palestine. The consequence has been a century of violence,overwhelmingly at the cost of Palestinian lives.
Host Omar Baddar sits down with Amer Shurrab, a Palestinian from Khan Yunis, Gaza who has lost six of his family members as a result of Israeli attacks on Gaza since 2009. Amer recounts the story of his two brothers who were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers during Operation Cast Lead in 2009. The most recent attacks on Gaza have left three of his cousins dead and his family farm destroyed.

OPERATION CAST LEAD: The 1,400 Palestinian dead, most of them civilians, not to mention the staggering devastation revealed when Israel finally had to allow journalists into the Strip after it ended the assault, had a powerful impact on international and Arab opinion. Unfortunately, the shock of the assault was not sufficient to overcome the venomous split between the Fatah-backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas government that took over the Strip by force in July 2007.
